More than any other singer, Anita Baker defined quiet storm R&B in the '80s and '90s. Toledo-born and Detroit-raised, Baker first earned local fame at age 19 fronting the group Chapter 8. She made her solo recording debut six years later in 1983 with The Songstress, an auspicious national intro that included her first Top 5 R&B hit, "Angel."
After scoring a few minor hits and parting with her label, Baker reemerged on Elektra in 1986 with her second album, Rapture, which went multi-platinum on the strength of four Top 10 R&B singles, including "Sweet Love" and "Caught Up In The Rapture." The romance with fans really heated up with her next LP, the triple-platinum Giving You The Best That I Got, which, bolstered by the title track and "Just Because," dominated the #1 R&B album slot for four weeks in late '89. The platinum Compositions, featuring "Lead Me Into Love," and double-platinum Rhythm Of Love, featuring "Body And Soul," rounded out her Elektra years. All of those hot singles and more are gathered on Rhino's The Best Of Anita Baker.
